Award Ceremony of the 8th edition, 18th November

On 18 November 2021, the Award Ceremony of the 8^th edition of the Global Prize “Ethics & Trust in Finance for a Sustainable Future” took place, by Zoom.

It started with a Round Table “Does the focus on sustainability in finance make ethics redundant?” followed by a Keynote Address by Mairead McGuinness, European Commissioner for Financial Services, Financial Stability and Capital Markets Union.

Opening speech

Jean-Philippe Desmartin

Jean-Philippe Desmartin has joined Edmond de Rothschild Asset Management as Head of the Responsible Investment team in 2016. He will be based in Paris and report to Philippe Uzan, Chief Investment Officer. He is a graduate of the Paris University II (business law and management) as well as the IEP in Paris (finance and economics). A member of several working groups and international committees seeking to further ESG issues (the European Federation of Financial Analysts Societies – EFFAS, the International Corporate Governance Network – ICGN, Principles for Responsible Investment – PRI, World Intellectual Capital Initiative – WICI), Jean-Philippe also chairs the research commission at the French Forum pour l’Investissement Responsable. He has co-written three books on Responsible Investments (2005, 2014 and 2015). His practice was the object of a business case conducted by the Harvard Business School (HBS) in 2011. Last year, his work was recognised as innovative by an international jury of academics and institutional investors at the Investment Innovation Benchmark (IIB).

Hakan Lucius

Prof. Dr. Hakan Lucius is Head of Corporate Sustainability at the EIB, the European Union’s bank, covering the sustainability, non-financial reporting and stakeholder engagement dimensions of the institution. He possesses more than 20 years of sustainability experience. In his career he has structured multiple billions of euros of investments, through both, loans and equity, was quoted by the Financial Times and by Reuters, has led multinational teams and negotiated with governments, corporate and civil society organizations, alike. Lucius is Professor of Finance in parallel to his professional career at the EIB, and specializes in sustainable corporate finance and strategy. He has developed masters classes, which he teaches at SciencesPo in France, the Frankfurt School of Finance in Germany and the Welch College of Business as well as the University of Luxembourg.  He has lectured in Europe and the US and is an internationally acclaimed speaker, with TV appearances in multiple European countries, and speeches in over 16 nations globally.   He is passionate about sustainability and is quoted to state that “Sustainability is at the heart of long-term outperformance”.

Leire San-Jose

Leire San-Jose, PhD is Associate Professor of Finance Management (Reader or Accredited as Professor) at University of the Basque Country in Bilbao (Spain). Dr. San-Jose is also Visiting Research Fellow at Huddersfield Business School (United Kingdom) working with Professor Chris Cowton. She is leader of ECRI Ethics in Finance & Social Value Research group (www.ehu.eus/ecri). Her research is focus on ethics in finance, ethics in payment to suppliers, ESGs and value creation or social accounting from a sustainable view and based on phenomenological stakeholder point of view. She was the Organizing Committee President at EBEN-Spain meeting on 2010 and ISBEE meeting on 2022, both held in Bilbao. Leire was elected for the Excom at the online Meeting (unfortunately no face-to-face conference because of pandemic situation) in 2021.

Dr. Kara Tan Bhala is the President and Founder of Seven Pillars Institute for Global Finance and Ethics, USA, the world’s only independent think tank for research, education, and promotion of financial ethics. Dr. Tan Bhala has nearly 30 years of experience in global finance and was Senior Portfolio Manager of the Merrill Lynch Dragon Fund. She has been a sell-side equity analyst, a sell-side equity salesperson, a buy-side equity analyst, a portfolio manager, and a lecturer in finance. Dr. Tan Bhala contributed a chapter “The Philosophical Foundations of Financial Ethics” in Research Handbook on Ethics in Banking and Finance. She is the lead author of International Investment Management: Theory, Ethics and Practice. Her forthcoming book is Ethics in Finance: Case Studies from a Woman’s Life on Wall Street. Dr. Tan Bhala has a Bachelors (City, University of London) and Masters (Oxford University) in Business, a Masters in Liberal Studies (New York University), and a Masters and PhD in Philosophy (University of Kansas).

Mairead McGuinness

Mairead McGuinness is the European Commissioner for financial services, financial stability and Capital Markets Union.The Commissioner’s vision for the portfolio is focused on ensuring the financial sector’s strength and stability, so that it can deliver for people, society and the environment. Before joining the Commission in October 2020, Ms McGuinness was First Vice-President of the European Parliament from 2017. She served as a Member of the European Parliament from Ireland for 16 years, and was a Vice-President of the Parliament since 2014. During her time in the Parliament, Ms McGuinness sat on a range of committees, covering agriculture, environment, public health, budgets, petitions and constitutional affairs. Prior to becoming an MEP, she was an award-winning journalist, broadcaster and commentator.
